Reduce Dust in Your Dwelling and Save Money Doing Information technology
There are many reasons to make clean the air ducts in your dwelling house. When ducts are clean, the heating system lasts longer (because at that place is less dirt wearing out its components), we dust less oft, and the air we breathe at home is cleaner. For those of u.s. with allergies, this should be a welcome improvement.
Probably, yous don't ain a loftier-powered, truck-mounted vacuum system with 150 pes-hoses, and perhaps you lot can't afford the toll of such a service, simply I am going to tell you how yous can clean air ducts yourself. Sure, you won't be able to reach every nook and cranny, merely yous can withal eliminate roughly 85% of the dust in your organization without spending any more the cost of your new furnace filter.
In that location are many different designs of duct systems, such as attic systems and surreptitious systems, but the theory of cleaning these systems is the same. Y'all may not be able to access all parts of these systems (for example, surreptitious ducts), but you can make a difference in your air quality past cleaning the parts of the system that yous tin attain.
Earlier we get started, bank check out this video of what one of those loftier-powered, truck-mounted vacuum systems looks similar at work on a pretty neglected duct system.

What Y'all Need to Clean Your Air Ducts
- Furnace Filter: You volition definitely demand a new furnace filter at the end of the job. Make certain yous cull the right filter option for y'all.
- Vacuum: A household-type vacuum with a decent hose attached will piece of work, but a heavier-duty "Shop Vac" unit is improve, if available.
- Brush: Something closely resembling a toilet castor volition work all-time, merely a stiff-bristle paintbrush or something similar will do.
- Screwdriver or Hex Commuter: Your registers are likely held in place past some kind of fasteners. You will demand to use whatever tool fits the fasteners, normally a Phillips screwdriver or 1/4" hex driver.
- Newspaper Towels: Unless you want to do a lot of dusting and sweeping right after you clean your ducts, you will find these useful to cover some registers while you clean others.
Step-by-Step Duct Cleaning
1. Encompass supply registers. Get-go past covering upward your supply air registers (openings that supply heated air to the rooms) with paper towels. You do this to keep dislodged grit from globe-trotting into the rooms as you work. Merely lift the register, wrap the newspaper towel over the top of it, and supplant information technology.
Roofing the annals helps keep the dust downwardly.

2. Plough on fan. You want the fan running while yous are cleaning, to motion the dust along that you are going to loosen with your banging and brushing. Set the thermostat to "fan on," and shut off the "rut/absurd" mode then that only the fan is running. If y'all don't have a fan-only option, you can run the rut, or you might take this opportunity to install a newer thermostat with this helpful pick.
3. Check filter. Make certain your old furnace filter is in place, so that the grit you knock loose doesn't end upwards getting pulled into the fan motor.
iv. Loosen dust in ducts. Knock loose any buildup of dust in the duct work. Simply take the handle of your brush and begin tapping on whatsoever accessible duct work you have in the basement. This will help intermission upwards any deposits of dampened dust that may have stuck to the insides of the duct.
5. Make clean supply registers. At present you tin starting time sweeping out the dust in your supply registers. With the vacuum running and the finish of the hose nearly the register, lift the register. Use the hose to catch any dust that is existence pushed out by the fan, and go on to sweep as far into the register's piping every bit your hose can accomplish. Apply your brush to scuff loose whatever built upwardly dust in the register. As you go through the house sweeping out the supply registers, yous can remove and dispose of the paper towels you lot've put in place.
The registers in the floor should lift out easily.

vi. Clean return air registers. Sweep out your render air registers. These will likely be fastened with a spiral and crave your tool to remove them. Again, brush and sweep as far back into the register piping or cavity as you can.

Return air registers are usually mounted to the wall. They gather more grit and clay than supply registers.

7. Shut off fan and furnace. Close the fan off at the thermostat and the power off to the furnace via the service switch or billow panel. Do not just shut off the thermostat, because that doesn't plow off the ability to the unit.
eight. Make clean out blower compartment and return air boot. With the power off, you can remove the panels on the front of the furnace and access the blower compartment and the return air kicking. Utilize your vacuum to sweep upwardly the dust built up in the blower compartment and return air boot. This is where the keen bulk of your dust will be. Since you're in here, you lot should clean the furnace fan as well. Have a expect at the detailed commodity (with pictures) I wrote, How to Clean a Furnace Fan for a guide on doing this.
9. Supersede furnace filter. Ownership a better filter will definitely cutting down on the dust in your home. But the better the filter, the more often you should change it; a dingy filter restricts the airflow to the fan, which results in the blower motor running hotter and reducing its lifespan. How often you should change your filter depends on your home, your pets, and your location.
My Furnace Filter Recommendation: Filtrete MPR 1000s
I'grand asked a lot about what filter I apply. I adopt these Filtrete MPR 1000 filters. They filter a majority of the bad stuff that could be circulating through your dwelling'southward ductwork, do a cracking job keeping the ducts clean over the long booty, and they aren't such a tight filter that they need replacing also often (similar the MPR 1500s, for instance). They're only a actually adept balance betwixt good air and low maintenance.

Accessing Main Ducts
The areas you could not reach with the steps in a higher place are not likely to contain a lot of dust and clay. However, if you are determined to make clean every identify you tin can, at that place are a couple more things you lot tin can do.
1. Remove finish caps from rectangular duct work. If you have rectangular duct work, like in the picture beneath, you tin remove the end caps to access the inside of the ducts. You can slide the "drives" down off the duct and pull the cap out of the "slips." And so long as the duct is non butting up against the wall, y'all should be able to reach your vacuum hose in through the space uncovered by removing the cap, and sweep out any grit y'all detect. Yous could even use a flashlight to look inside the duct for dirty areas.
The vertical piece of metal on the correct is called a drive. It is folded over on the height and bottom of the duct to concord information technology in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the bulldoze downwards off the duct on both sides to detach the 2 pieces.
2. Clean inside basement registers. Often duct piece of work will include registers installed throughout the system to distribute air to the basement. If you remove these registers, you'll gain even further access to the main trunk line.
Congratulations!
If you do what you can of the items above, you lot will accept made a significant dent in the grit in your environment, and you lot will have done the best you can, short of calling a professional air duct cleaning company.

Questions & Answers
Question: I have vents in every room by the ceiling, and I take no basement. My furnace is in the closet of my i level house. How tin I make clean it myself?
Answer: There are many different designs of duct systems, such as attic systems and surreptitious systems, but the theory of cleaning these systems is the aforementioned. Yous may non exist able to access all parts of these systems (for case, hush-hush ducts), just you lot tin make a difference in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the system that you can reach.
Question: This is a very helpful article, as well wondering about how long to leave the fan on for?
Reply: Thank you. I go out my fan run nearly 345 days a twelvemonth.
Question: When cleaning my ventilation ducts, can I leave the fan and furnace on if I merely want to vacuum out the cavity below the air register?
Respond: Sure. There's no problem with that.
Question: You say you leave your furnace fan running 345 days of the year; doesn't this increase your utility bill quite a scrap?
Reply: Of grade it'south not free but it's barely noticeable. The toll of keeping a fan running once it's gotten started is minimal and when you factor in the furnace running less cycles per day information technology becomes a wash or better sometimes. And so at that place's the comfort of having even temperatures throughout the house. That in itself is worth the times when it does peradventure toll me a few dollars a month. I recommend you lot requite it a try. To gauge the cost you'd actually want to get-go in a month where there's no real demand for heating or cooling so you can see the affect on your bills. If you start at present (winter) it's hard because of course your bill is going to exist higher than last calendar month and then how much of that is a result of running the fan is difficult to detect. Perhaps y'all can compare to final year at this time and see bold your electric hasn't gone up.
Question: Are solid square ducts ameliorate and cleaner than collapsable types?
Reply: Cleaner aye. Improve? Depends on how they're installed but if proper, and then not really. They each make full the need they are designed for. I personally would employ hard duct whenever I tin but flex duct is necessary in certain applications.
Question: I take grit effectually my ceiling registers in some rooms and my filter on return annals gets dusty and dirty in less than a month. Will cleaning above assist?
Reply: Cleaning never hurts but every house is dissimilar with a lot of factors that decide how dusty a house gets and how fast.
Question: I think a lot of dust got sucked into my ceiling ducts. I can make clean one day and write my name in the grit the next twenty-four hours. What do y'all recommend?
Answer: My commodity is intended to make things "better" for homeowners who may not be able to afford a pro cleaning or just to perform upkeep and improve their air quality. Ceiling ducts are frequently connected to flexible ducting and so the theory is the same, only you accept to be careful non to tear the interior liner. So, carefully do the best you can just if y'all want every nook and cranny and can afford it, rent a pro. (Don't forget that keeping your fan running helps clean your air and if you apply a pleated filter, you can practice even amend. Maybe have to modify it more often, but it's definitely worth it. Did I say run the fan? I always tell people this and they don't heed. I guess it goes confronting our instincts or something.)
Question: Will leaving the fan running year round increase the utility bill and how about turning off the pilot light?
Answer: I leave my fan run approximately 340 days a twelvemonth and discover very little if any impact on my electric bill. As for the pilot, I would turn mine off if I had 1 but I am comfy knowing how to and remembering to relight it when the fall rolls around. No sense burning up gas for 6 months for no reason.
Question: Tin can round flex ducts be cleaned?
Reply: Yep. More than carefully and not perfectly but yes.
Question: Every time we plough on the estrus we get a olfactory property throughout the trailer which smells like poop, and nosotros immediately become nauseous. Any suggestions on what the cause may be?
Respond: A bad heat exchanger can brand an awful smell, and those are symptoms of CO exposure and so I would definitely have it checked out and get a CO detector immediately. Oftentimes times a oestrus exchanger will accept a 20 year warranty on information technology.
Question: How oftentimes should we clean our ducts?
Answer: I would recommend having the furnace cleaned annually but the ducts less ofttimes. It actually depends on the person (allergies, etc.) and the domicile (number of pets, etc.).
Question: I have the large air filters (24x16x5). Can I add filters to the return air grills and eliminate the large Honeywell filter?
Answer: Actually, that'south a pretty standard size for a residential system. That said, in that location's no real way to practise this, and it would not be financially a adept idea if you lot could. If the furnace is in the abode there are means to put the filter right in the bottom of the furnace itself, but otherwise, I hate to say it, simply it would exist hard to practice much about this situation other than to call a company to exercise a semi-annual maintenance for you. I understand the inconvenience, just again, information technology would be difficult or expensive or both to rearrange this. A cheesecloth over the vents would exist an selection just would exist a lot to change them regularly. It wouldn't catch all that goes into the system, and you would want to remove the main filter. I would fifty-fifty more so recommend a servicing one time or twice a year since the blower volition likely muddy up faster so y'all might too but let them modify the filter and save the other efforts.
Question: How do I go rid of a musty odour in my business firm?
Answer: For a quick fix, placing dryer sheets on the air filter could assist. Just be sure they are on the correct side of the filter so they don't get sucked into the blower and apply a clean filter.
Question: Would it help keep dust downwards by putting cheesecloth on your vents permanently?
Answer: Yous would have to change them like whatsoever other filter and make sure they aren't restricting airflow, but your master filter takes care of virtually of this. It would probably be more work and maintenance than its worth.
Question: When cleaning air ventilation ducts, do I run just the fan or the fan on cool? Should the thermostat exist in absurd or heat style?
Answer: You leave everything you would as normal but switch the fan to "on". The balance of the organization will however operate as it ordinarily would, just the fan volition proceed to run between cycles.
Question: Are registers and vents the same thing?
Answer: The terminology gets confusing, but yes. There are render air registers/vents that draw air dorsum to the fan and should non have a way to close and supply air vent bring conditioned air back to the rooms and normally can exist shut via a damper of some sort. Whether in the floor, on the wall, or in the ceiling they are all registers/vents.
Question: When cleaning the render ducts should all registers exist covered to forestall dust from going thru the house while the fan is on?
Reply: I believe that'southward mentioned in this article. I would recommend it, yes.

Does this make any difference for cleaning the vents with the vacuum ? Also, I do replace the furnace filters, but for whatever reason they never seem to do much (( IE they are never dingy )).

Our ac was cooling well until heavy rains that we had last week. I heard gurgling in our ground level air-conditioning vents and then I turned off the air conditioning for a number of hours until I felt like the water would drain out. When I turned it back on, there was no gurgling and then I thought things were back to normal. Since that nighttime the air-conditioning is not cooling well and now I wonder if the rainwater brought dirt into the ductwork. If and then, what is the remedy?

At that place isn't whatsoever specific equipment that I tin can recommend for cleaning your own ducts. There isn't annihilation I'thousand enlightened of for such and is why I just recommend you milk shake em around a bit to loosen up whatsoever dust in there and let the air movement information technology down the line for you. Possibly a professional company would have something special for those but I wouldn't be sure what that is. If they didn't check with a camera to see if there was some reason they couldn't clean the ducts proper and then that's their fault for not being diligent on the quote and they know underground ducts can present these kind of issues. Thanks for your article.
We recently purchased a business firm and it turns out the heating ducts are made of Transite. The firm is ane story and all ducts are in the slab. Nosotros've had the air tested for asbestos, and in that location is none, but the ducts practise indeed contain asbestos.
I take two questions.
We had a company clean the ducts. They want to charge $700 (haven't paid all the same because job is non complete). They've supposedly cleaned the ducts twice at present, but there is a large amount of rodent poop, debris, sand, etc. still in them. It seems like this company either doesn't know how to clean ducts or isn't capable of doing so. They plainly didn't embrace the heat registers while they were cleaning because the entire house is at present covered in dust. Extremely frustrating because we simply had the floors cleaned and cleaned all of the shelving.
Question 1: How would y'all proceed with this?
I've read online the all-time matter to practice with in-slab ducts is to fill them with concrete, cap them off, and figure out another way to supply heat to the house.
Question two: What are options here? I've researched heat pumps a bit, but really don't want to install them as they would destroy the exterior aesthetic of the house. But I'k thinking they might exist the simply option since it is a single story house on a slab. There is an attic that is accessible.

Unfortunately, I'1000 in the same boat and all you tin can actually do is keep cleaning. A duct cleaning won't really do much for the ongoing shedding and dust our kids create.

I would endeavor to observe the root of the problem and take intendance of that to end the issue. Calculation things similar air cleaner and UV lite to the arrangement tin assistance long term with some of this but having the a/c coil cleaned and checked (the indoor evaporator coil) is a good start if you've not had that done before. If the smell is coming from the crawlspace and getting pulled into the air stream is the effect so sealing the ductwork with a mastic may also exist a good measure and is something you tin can do yourself with a bucket of mastic, a pigment brush, pair of rubber gloves and long sleeves....y'all don't want to become it tangled up in your arm hair and such. If you don't then I'm even so not certain what that could be. If you lot're in heating flavour, some furnaces will smell bad because the heat exchanger is bad and if and then, you need to consider a new system if you're non under warranty. Note: Many heat exchangers have rather long warranties. twenty years...maybe lifetime.

Dan Reed (author) on March 08, 2022:
Colleen - I assume you lot have underground ducting then and yous would need to take them cleared and sealed which will likely crave a fair amount of money and a professional. If they aren't underground and you're experiencing this then it sounds like your ducts are in need of insulating because they are in an unconditioned space and the inner and outer temps are creating condensation. Thanks for reading.
Colleen Vincelli on March 07, 2022:
what happens when you have a lot of water in your air ducts..we simply take central air, not heating ?
Dan Reed (author) on January 16, 2022:
Thank you Greenmind!
GreenMind Guides from USA on Jan fifteen, 2022:
Hey great hub with lots of good info and advice. I like the fashion you write and you conspicuously know what you're talking about.
violet shrop on January 09, 2022:
Thank y'all so much Daniel-
Dan Reed (author) on January 06, 2022:
Violet Shrop - Thank you and no. You don't want the power off while cleaning registers...you want the fan running. Now once you lot get to the furnace itself, at the end and you lot're ready to alter the filter and wrap up...yes. Plough off the ability.
Cheers for reading.
VioletShrop on January 06, 2022:
This is really well written & helpful. Only to make sure: so to clean your return annals, you don't need to shut the power off? I wouldn't remember so either, mine looks like yours, merely a infinite under the hvac chiffonier, no electric chemical element seen. Thanks.
Dan Reed (author) on Jan 03, 2022:
Tyler - Yes. If the breaker to the furnace is off, yous should be safe under normal circumstances. A simple voltage detector is always nice to have though to be sure. You just touch information technology to anything and if there is voltage, it will blink and/or beep. Just costs like $xx and is useful for many things. Thanks for reading.
Tyler on January 02, 2022:
If I switch off the breaker, then I can touch everything on the unit of measurement at the intake right? Thanks Daniel this is awesome.
Dan Reed (writer) on December 29, 2022:
DCME - Goose egg actually happens. Yous but won't exist able to clean that area without getting up there. If y'all get as much as you can, you're yet doing something.
DCME on December 12, 2022:
some of the supply registers are in a valeted ceiling. since i tin't tech them what happens
Dan Reed (author) on November 24, 2022:
Christine - I think you're misunderstanding. I'm recommending you encompass the supply registers, not the return and only temporarily, not forever. It would take a lot more than a newspaper towel over the supply registers for a few minutes to fire upwards a motor. Especially on the supply side. If information technology were return air, I'd say you're right but even and so, it would accept a lot more than a paper towel and few minutes to cause any sort of damage to the motor.
christine on November 19, 2022:
roofing the registers and running the fan will burn down out the fan. bad idea.
D. Bunch on October 23, 2022:
We bought an older mobile home over a yr agone. I bought a wet dry vac and information technology didn't have enough suction ability to vacuum the flooring duct. The render air is disconnected. I run window a.c. units and take just floor heat. There are blockages in the duct. So, is a store vac better than wet/dry vac? I demand heat desperately before winter arrives.
Dan Reed (author) on October 13, 2022:
Bill - The metallic shouldn't concur the odor and y'all probably won't be able to clean information technology all unless you disconnect information technology so for the time and attempt, I'd replace the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean them.
Bill on October 08, 2022:
Howdy, just bought a house where previous possessor allowed dogs to urinate all over air vents. Some urine must take leaked down air ducts. What is best way to clean air ducts?
Dan Reed (writer) on October 08, 2022:
Mila - Not all ducts tin feasibly be reached and vertical ducts in the wall are not usually the main culprit in belongings dust. This article is about doing a pretty darn good job on your own just not necessarily to get to every nook and cranny. Thank you for reading!
Mila on October 06, 2022:
I have air exchanger the pips are in the wall.Haw can I clean them my selfish?
Kim Spraggins on September 27, 2022:
Later trying to observe equally adept deal on air duct cleaning I idea most researching how to do it ourselves and I'm and then glad I did! This rehab house has been sitting for 9 yrs and merely God knows what's been lurking and swirling around for the 2+yrs since we installed the furnace. Now with 2 cats everything gets covered in dust particularly in the summertime with no central air, but loftier-powered flooring fans. I broil cakes and have to turn them all off to keep the dust, lint, cat hair etc from landing in them! Eeek...and when the sun shines through the window the grit becomes even more than visible! Grit, dust, dust...I tin can't accept it any more and will be so happy when we're done with this DIY projection! Update to follow! Thanks and so much!!!! Mmmwah
Kristen Howe from Northeast Ohio on May 02, 2022:
Daniel, these were great tips on how to clean the air vents yourself with simple and piece of cake steps. Voted upwardly for useful!
MarkE on April 10, 2022:
I would like to add that a lot of the dust is from your domicile and by and large found in your render vents and render ducting because as it pulls the air into the ducting from your house, forth with the dust and moisture, some of it volition gravitate towards the lesser of the ducting due to
i) gravity
2) wet condensing
iii) static electricity
Your supply vents ought to exist relatively make clean in comparing due to the fact that at that place is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. All the same there will be some admitting a lot less in whatsoever effect.
Banging on the outside of your vents may release some grit but opening upwardly the vents at their ends if possible volition allow you to vacuum a heck of a lot more dust.
I am replacing as many joist liners equally possible, considering it is relatively cheap and gets rid of any rust, mold, bacteria, and of course dust that you may or may non see.
Skillful luck in your ventures, may the wind always be at your back!
Dan Reed (writer) on July 25, 2022:
Well, if it's merely a piece, I'd throw it away. It'south probable a flake piece that's been in there longer than you may have realized and in your cleaning, worked it's manner to visibility. Unfortunately, much debris found in duct is from construction and people using the duct as a dustpan. If you don't see any parts missing or holes in the ducting, and then just toss it and know that they're that much cleaner.
Nina on July 24, 2022:
Prior to reading your article, I cleaned my ductwork with a shop vac and it worked really well. The adjacent day I plant a slice of ductwork in one of the floor registers. Not sure what to practice virtually it. Any help is much appreciated.
Dan Reed (author) on July 09, 2022:
Jeremy - I allow all comments. Particularly ones similar this because it gives me the opportunity to educate people. Beginning off, if y'all actually read the article, I clearly land this is a pretty good way to go if you don't have the coin for professionals. I'grand guessing you're a duct cleaner and don't want me showing people a nice alternative that volition salvage them money and improve their air quality far more than doing nil. My articles are not aimed to help or hurt anyone'due south business organization...only to assist people who can't afford such services to practice the best they can to assist themselves enjoy these luxuries when it's inside their ability to do and then. I stand past every word in this article. With over twenty years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running large commercial projects and everything in between, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading...or kind of anyway.
Jeremy on July 09, 2022:
lol!! You remember this compares to a real cleaning in whatsoever way? Non even close. Some jobs should be left to the professionals.

Yes. Information technology is expensive. Glad I could aid.
Candice on November 19, 2022:

Thanks bleedercleaners. Yes and the skillful news is, in a new home, if you clean the ducts actually well right later the home is built, you will cut downward on much of the grit forever. Unfortunately, in a new home, the drywall and sawdust often gets into and is swept into the estrus vents. Get information technology now and it tin help a lot.
